He was predeceased by: his parents, Rutledge Hill Hammond, Sr. and Eva Robinson Hammond; and his sister Anita Mae Hammond Candler. He is survived by: his wife Norma Hightower Hammond; his children, Darryl Hammond (Angela) of Victoria, TX and Rita Hammond of Charleston; and his grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Hammond, Parker Hammond, Dr. Elizabeth Johanna Carroll, Erin Margaret Carroll (Jason O'Flynn) and Ivey Rutledge Hammond Hicks. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
