He was predeceased by : his parents, Carrie Lewis Gates and James Melvin; his wife Iva Dean Barnes; and his siblings, Azilee Mention Darby and James Stephen Melvin, Jr..

He is survived by : his stepdaughter Melissa Barnes; his grandchildren, Greg, Terrance and Jarrell; and his great grandchild Aailyah. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
