He is survived by: his wife Wanda Tillotson Abernathy; his children, James "Jammy" Abernathy, Jr. and Kiley Painter (Gary); his grandchildren, Garrison Preston Painter and Karsyn Brooke Painter; his sister Carolyn Tucker (Ricky); and his niece Lynn Rusnica (Ed). He is also survived by three great-nieces, one great-nephew, and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
