He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Thomas Smith and Laura Deese Johnson; and his sister Sheila Johnson. He is survived by: his wife Kathy Smith; his children, Amber Smith Freeman (Jason) of McBee, Jennifer Love (Lee) of Fort Mill and Michael Lowder (Abby) of Ridgefield; his grandchildren, Kaleb Freeman, Kaden Freeman, Walker Love and Stella Love; his siblings, Jeff Smith (Gale) of Jefferson, Cindy Sullivan (Wilbur) of Jefferson and Peggy Johnson of Mount Croghan; and his brother-in-law Randy Mabry (Ali) of Beckley. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
