He was predeceased by: his parents, John Edward Coates and Nettie Bell Catoe Coates; his son Joseph L. "Joey" Coats; and his siblings, Jonnie, Mildred, Oscar, Bill, Harold and Joel.
He is survived by: his daughter Terri L. Coats; his grandsons, Christopher Coats (Jordan) and Joshua Coats (Samantha); his great grandchildren, Crew Coats, Briggs Coats and Bennett Coats; and his brother Emerson Coates (Frankie Wolfe).
Memorial remembrances may be made to Sand Hill Baptist Church, 6895 Highway 341, Kershaw, South Carolina 29067, Arrangements are under the care of Baker Funeral Home of Kershaw, South Carolina.
