He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin Bates and Daisy Bates; his wife Carole Roof Bates; his grandson Dalton Lugo; and his siblings, W. B. Bates, Thomas Bates, Inez Keisler, Thelma Mundy and Nadine Hall.
He is survived by: his children, Julie McFarland (Bruce), Lynn Sigg (Mark) and Michael Bates (Lori); his grandchildren, Benjamin McFarland (Elizabeth), Rachel Lucia (Peter), Thomas Bates and Travis Bates; his great grandchildren, Harrison, Walker McFarland, Eleanor and Katherine Lucia; and his sister Rivie Bolen. He is also survived by his family and many close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Springdale Baptist Church.
