He was predeceased by: his parents, Kathleen Berry and Frederick Sheldon South; his siblings, Robert South and Patricia Ritchie; and his daughter-in-law Tina South.

He is survived by: his children, Tammy South Parnell (John) of Lexington, Douglas Michael South Jr. (Sandy) of Tampa, FL, Christopher Sheldon South of Lexington and Warren Jeffery South (Maia) of Sydney Australia; and his sister Kathleen Liotta of Lexington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Because of his love for all children even those with disabilities, he often participated in motorcycle charity events for Toys for Tots.
