He is survived by: his wife Jean Burnett Gainey; his children, David Lewis Gainey of Awendaw, Melanie Gainey Cappelmann (Billy) of Isle and Glenn Howard Gainey, Jr. of Burlington, NC; and his grandchildren, Will Cappelmann (Lindsey), Emily Cappelmann, Brooke Gainey and Andrew Gainey.
