He is survived by: his wife Shirley Blackmon Coates; his daughter Jennifer Coates Drayer (Robert); his brother William Douglas Coates (Linda); his grandchildren, Emmalyne Drayer and Alexa Drayer; and his nieces, Amy Coates Hite (David) and Pamela Coates.
