He was predeceased by: his parents, Layton Curtis Small and Lucy Williams Small; his son Michael Dunlop Small; and his siblings, William "Bud" Layton Small, Frank Small, Agnes Small Shelley and Betsy Annette Small Keefe.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara Ann Small; his children, Leslie Small Miller and Randy Small (Pat); and his grandchildren, Lindsey Miller Bailey (Christopher), Brandon Miller (Sarah), Miranda Small Norris, Dustin Small and Jade Small North (Dale). He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
