He was predeceased by: his parents, David Kelso Powell and Rachel Alford Powell; and his siblings, Thomas Edward Powell, Robert Morgan Powell and Mary Rachel Cole.

He is survived by: his wife Joan Bennett Powell of Mount Pleasant; his sons, David K. "Kelly" Powell II (Tracy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Phillip M. Powell (Rhonda) of Kingsland, GA, Robert E. Powell (Karen) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Scott Powell (Jill) of Charleston, SC; his grandchildren, David K. Powell III (Mary Beth), William Drew Powell (Meghan), Reece Avery Powell, Hunter Powell, Caroline Ann Drennon (Daniel) and Megan Elizabeth Powell; and his great grandchildren, Addison, Olivia, Reece, Ford and Maverick.
