He was predeceased by: his parents, Dewey Burns and Daisy Burns; his former wife Carol Ann Scheff; his son Colen Burns; his grandson John Brandon Burns; and his brother Curtis Brown.

He is survived by: his wife Gail Burns; his children, Celeste Moser (John) of LaRue, Constance Burns-Griffith of Obetz, James Phillip Hyman (Julie) of Pamplico, SC, Cammy Conwy (Ken) of Conway, SC and Alexa McKenzie-Mason (Abnathy); and his brother Larry Kinser (David Kinser) of Emerald Island, NC. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
