He was predeceased by: his parents, Melvin Lee and Portia Loraine Tevis Hammel; and his stepmother Mary Hammel. He is survived by: his wife Patti; his children, David Hammel (Julie) and Beth Sutherland (Rush); his grandchildren, Taylor Conner (Dallis), Samantha Lanford (Patrick), Reagan Ratcliffe (Lucas), Ben Hammel, Jessica Hammel, Brady and Hunter Sutherland; his great grandchild Dalton Sellers; his sisters, Sally Warren (William), Amy Hill (Henry) and Laura Ann Bostic (Tom); his brother-in-law Larry Simpkins (Dru); and his friend Jennifer Vereen. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 4th 2026 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the First Baptist Church (3891 Hwy 17, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576). A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 4th 2026 at 4:00 PM at the same location.
In honor of Melvin's legacy and his commitment to his church community, memorial contributions may be made to Coastal Church First Baptist Murrells Inlet Building Fund in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
