He was predeceased by: his former wife Alice Grainger; his parents, George Hammel and Marjorie Hammel (Prenderville); and his brother George. He is survived by: his wife Jane; his children, Colleen Schwabik (Ken) and John "Jay" (Jen); his stepchild Drs; his grandchildren, Liam, Donovan, Tadhg Schwabik, Emma, Isabelle, Tobin and Rowan Pacheco; and his siblings, Valerie McCarthy, Virginia Hammel, Kathleen Patterson, Brian Hammel and Margot Perrone.
