He was predeceased by: his wife Janice Annette Cosnahan Gay; and his parents, Ivan Vernon Gay and Pearl Sellen Gay Overturf. He is survived by: his children, James Gay (late Carol), Robert Edward Gay (Diana) and Pamela Sue Wessinger (Earl, Jr.). He is also survived by great-grandchildren.
