He was predeceased by : his parents, James Gelzer, Sr. and Elizabeth Perry Gelzer; his brothers, John Henry Perry, Sammie Perry and Leroy Gelzer; and his aunt Mattie Mae Perry.

He is survived by : his wife Yvonne Davis Gelzer; his siblings, Elouise Perry of Harleyville, SC, Eva Mae Gelzer of Harleyville, SC, Lisa Gelzer of Harleyville, SC, James Gelzer, Jr. of Harleyville, SC and Steven Gelzer (Cathy) of Bowman, SC; his sisters-in-law, Sarah Gelzer of Bowman, Tressa Davis of Columbia, SC, Ingrid Williams (Charles) of Decatur, GA and Sandra Franklin (Charles) of Orangeburg, SC; his aunt Eulie Mae Perry (Lue Ellen Smalls) of Gaston, SC; and his uncles, Albert Perry, Bobby Perry, Isaiah Perry, Matthew Smalls (Charlotte), Johnny Smalls (Vernell) and Thomas Smalls. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
