He was predeceased by : his parents, Vannie Mitchum and Lydia Mitchum; and his sister Wilma Mitchum Jackson. He is survived by : his wife Linda Beck Mitchum; his children, Amanda Mitchum and John L. Mitchum, Jr. (Jay); and his siblings, Carolyn Lohn (Frank), Paul Mitchum and Kenneth Mitchum (Hopper).

A memorial service was held on Friday, April 12th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Thompson Funeral Home (1012 Whitman St SE, Orangeburg, SC 29115).
