He was predeceased by: his parents, James Cates and Mary Ellen Stancil Whitetree. He is survived by: his children, Richard Stephen Cates II (Rebecca) of Pomaria, Katherine Cates Stanton (Tripp) of Atlanta, GA and Madison Leigh Gardiner (David) of Prosperity; and his brother David Cates. He is also survived by three grandchildren.
