He was predeceased by : his parents, Edgar "Bub" Atkinson and Anita Beard Atkinson; and his siblings, Betty Jean Osborne, Richard Atkinson and Robert Atkinson.

He is survived by : his former life partner Madine Anderson Beard of Kingstree; his daughters, Nita Atkinson (Eliazar Serrato) of Kingstree, Katie Burrows (T. J.) of Kingstree and Belisa "Bea" Hyatt (Cody) of Washington State; his grandchildren, Alex Serrato, Anna Serrato, Adrian Serrato, Tyler Beard, Damian Beard, Ashley Burrows, Myles Hyatt and Leia Hyatt; and his brother Bill Atkinson. He is also survived by three great grandchildren.
