He was predeceased by : his parents, Junior Matthews and Trella Mae Byrd Matthews; his grandparents, Capers, Louise McKnight Byrd, Eddie and Mary Matthews; his brother-in-law Robert Coward; and his sister Mamie Matthews Coward.

He is survived by : his siblings, Elaine Eaddy (Marion) of Effingham and Sammie Matthews (Renee) of Pamplico; and his nieces and nephews, Karen Stroble (Dennis) of Scranton, Vicki Gamez (Martin) of Scranton, Chelsie Matthews of Coward, Caitlin Matthews of Pamplico, Dean Coward of Columbia, Chad Eaddy (Jill) of Florence and Nick Matthews of Pamplico.
