He was predeceased by: his wife Carrie Martin Smith; his parents, Houston K. "Tiny" Smith and Vyolet Chaney Smith; and his children, Shawn Paul Smith and Timberly Sampson.

He is survived by: his son Ai Wagner (Michelle); his granddaughter Timberly Wagner; and his brother David Smith.
