He was predeceased by: his parents, Lemuel "Red" Gardner and Myrle Gardner (Swain); and his great grandchild Francis Faith Kempfer. He is survived by: his wife Alice Verne of Mary's Catholic Church; his sons, Terry Gardner (Amy) of Chesnee and Todd Gardner (Melanie) of Champion; his grandchildren, Steven, Cassie, Grant and Trent Gardner; and his sisters, Pat Rushman and Faye Card (Everett).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests to consider donating to the wonderful facility that took care of Gary during his final days, Bon Secours Hospice by Compassus, 1836 W. Georgia Rd, Simpsonville, SC. 29680.
