He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver Cecil McKelvey, Sr. and Etta Grooms McKelvey; his siblings, Oliver Cecil McKelvey, Jr., Jennings Calvert "JC" McKelvey and Marjorie Ann Hill; and his granddaughter Emily Lauren Rose.

He is survived by: his son Mark McKelvey (Amy) of Indian Trial, NC; his grandsons, Caleb McKelvey (Anna Collier) of Austin, TX, Zack McKelvey (Sally) of Indian Trail, NC and Brendan Rose of Charlotte, NC; his great grandchild Sullivan McKelvey; and his caregivers, Gerlene Jamerson, Carolyn Jackson and Quin Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Curesearch.org, for the fight against pediatric cancer, which claimed the life of his granddaughter Emily in 2008.
