Betty Jean Fortune Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Betty Jean Fortune (Sumter, South Carolina), who passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 69, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her husband Lucious Fortune, Jr.; her father Britton Reames, Sr.; and her siblings, Joseph Reames, Britton Reames, Jr. and Naomi Aaron.

She is survived by: her mother Willie Mae Capers Reames of Bishopville; her children, Reginald Fortune and Chantae Fortune of Dumfries, Virginia; her granddaughter Kanesha Fortune of Elliott; her siblings, Lorine Aaron of Bishopville, Evelyn Reames Rembert (Levi) of Bishopville, Carolyn Reames of Bishopville, James Reames (Shirley) of Bishopville and Hosea Pearson (Carrie) of Bishopville; her sisters-in-law, Sadie Lee Glover (Buddy), Ann Fortune, Vivian Fortune, Carol Wilson and Rilla Wilson (Nick); and her close friend Bernice Price. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Viewing was held on Friday, July 25th 2025 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Ephriam D. Stephens Funeral Home (230 N Lafayette Dr, Sumter, SC 29150). A celebration of life was held on Saturday, July 26th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the New Zion A. M. E. Church (78 Elliott Hwy, Bishopville, SC 29010).
