He was predeceased by: his parents, James Arthur Smith and Esther Belle Abbott Smith; his daughter Cathy Gene Smith; and his siblings, James Elmo "J. E.", Russell, Wesley, Hannum and Betty Ruth.

He is survived by: his children, Pamela Sue Talbott (Clayton), Roger Curtis Smith (Nancy), Eric Eugene Smith (Christina) and Steven Lewis Smith (Rachel); and his sister Joyce Hudgens. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
