He was predeceased by: his parents, Len Benjamin Mathis, Sr. and Mary Inez Cubbage Mathis; his brother L. Benjamin "Benny" Mathis, Jr.; his grandson James Austin Mathis; and his sibling's children, Heather Lyles, Mark Lyles and Terry Griffin.
He is survived by: his son James E. Mathis, Jr. (Wendy); his grandchildren, Sean-Luke Mathis, Cassia Linda Mathis Taylor and Calista Ann Mathis Matthews; his great grandchildren, Grizzley Matthews, Coyote Matthews and Asen Taylor; his sister Dorothy "Dotty" Lyles (Dan); and his sibling's children, Tami Griffin, Keleigh Corbett (Carl), Paige Stokes (Danny) and Chuck Van Patten.
Visitation was held on Sunday, November 2nd 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home (515 Miller Rd, Sumter, SC 29150). A funeral service was held on Sunday, November 2nd 2025 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
