He was predeceased by: his parents, Horace McRae Smith and Vidara C. Smith; and his brother Harold McRae Smith. He is survived by: his children, Travis Blue Smith (Molly) of Greenwood, SC and McRae Smith McCants (John Michael) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his grandchildren, Lila Blue Weede, Wyatt Walker Weede and Maeve Reyling Smith; and his close friends, Jamie, Denise Campbell, Gene Davis (late Karen), Frank Hough of Don, Seay, Ken, Nancy Stoudenmire, Brittany, David Dinkins and Kimberly Cox McCorvey (family: Clara Varga-Gonzales, Robert, Sr., Tallulah McCants).
