Obituary for William Timothy O’Connor, Sr.
February 18, 1960 – March 7, 2023

SUMTER, SC – Our beloved Bill passed away at home after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Born in Auburn, N.Y., Bill was the son of John J. O’Connor and the late Gertrude A. (Cote) O’Connor. Shortly after Bill was born, the family moved to Dedham, MA. Bill attended Dedham public schools and was a member of the Dedham High class of 1976. In 1989, Bill married Maria Mendez. They bought a home in Dedham and their three kids also attended the Dedham public schools. In 2002, the family moved to Millis, MA. in 2017, Bill and Maria relocated to Sumter, SC to be close to their son stationed at Shaw Airforce Base.

Bill worked hard all his life as a food service director in the nursing home business. He most loved spending time with his family, and he adored the family’s pet dogs and cats. He enjoyed spending summer vacations at his parent’s resort condo in Newport, RI. He kept himself fit through jogging, swimming and tennis. As he got older, Bill developed a close friendship with his Dad, who is now 92 years old. Bill was a devout Catholic, who was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Annabelle, Jack, Teddy and Clara Calapai. He will be remembered by all who knew him for the goodness of his heart.

Loved ones who will cherish their memories of Bill are his wife of 34 years, Maria Edith (Mendez) O’Connor of Sumter, SC; son George V. Calapai and his wife Frances (Northgraves) of Northborough, MA; son Sgt William T. (Billy) O’Connor, Jr. and his wife Sgt Veronica (Romero), now based at McGuire Air Force Base and living in Manahawkin, NJ; daughter Monique O’Connor of Columbia, SC; sister M. Elizabeth (Betty) Fini and her husband John of Mansfield, MA; brother, John J. (Jack) O’Connor and his wife Jeanne (Zerbel) of Dedham, MA; sister Kathryn A. (Kathy) Kelley and her husband Paul of Dedham, MA; and many nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles, and cousins.
