He was predeceased by: his parents, Joel F. Cannington Sr. and Catherine Searson Cannington; his wife Jeannine O'Quinn Cannington; and his siblings, Agnes Breland, Frank Cannington, Charles Cannington and Joel Cannington Jr..

He is survived by: his daughters, Lynn Bowers of Varnville, Claudia Long (Mark) of Varnville and Karen "Kaye" Wilson (Nathan) of Hampton; and his grandchildren, Anna Bowers, William Bowers, Daniel Long, Josh Wilson (Claire), Andrew Wilson (Christine) and Emily Pitman (Parkes). He is also survived by many great grandchildren.
