He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edward Bates and Louise Carroll Bates; his wife Linda Bates; and his brothers, Robert "Bob" Arthur Bates, Sr., Joseph "Joe" Bates and Allen Bates.
He is survived by: his sons, Gregg Bates (Stephanie Owens) of Williston, SC and Roger Bates (Roxanne) of Williston, SC; his granddaughters, Gabrielle Nicole Bates of Williston, SC and Madison Steadman (Justin) of Barnwell, SC; his sister Elizabeth "Betty" Bates of Blackville, SC; and his sisters-in-law, Linda Rankin Bates and Nancy Bates. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 26th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Williston (13030 Main St, Williston, SC 29853). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 26th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
