Delmar Giegling Obituary

Delmar D. Giegling, 88, of Canistota, SD passed away in the comfort of his home on August 14, 2019. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the United Church of Canistota in Canistota, SD. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Canistota.

Delmar Dale Giegling was born on February 16, 1931 to Albert and Laura (Oberheu) Giegling in Sioux Falls, SD. The family moved to Canistota, SD when Delmar was young, and a sister Elizabeth was born. They farmed northeast of Canistota.

He entered the United States Army in 1952-1953 and was stationed in Alaska during this time in a heavy equipment unit. When he was discharged, he came home to Canistota and worked on the family farm.

Delmar was united in marriage with Phyllis Nielson on December 8, 1968. They raised five children, Michael, Doug, Sandy, Lori, and Robert, in Canistota. Delmar worked as a mechanic at Larry's Service for many years and was a custodian at the Canistota School.

Delmar was a well-known and well-loved member of his community who was known by all generations from working and living all his life in the Canistota area and finally helping Phyllis with the preschool at the Zion Lutheran Church, becoming known as Grandpa Delmar and Grandma Phyllis to a new generation in Canistota. Delmar and Phyllis were avid fans of the Canistota Hawks and cheered at countless games through the years.

He was known as a quiet man who had a great sense of humor that he would throw in when you least expected it. He showed his love by his hard work and willingness to help others. His family will forever remember him as a caring and devoted husband, dad, and grandpa.

Grateful for sharing his life: his wife of 50 years Phyllis Giegling; his 5 children.

Michael (Martha) Giegling of Volga, SD, Doug (Tracy) Giegling of Canistota, SD, Sandy Giegling of Canistota, SD, Lori (John) Bockenstedt of Sioux Falls, SD, and Robert (Kristen) Giegling of Colton, SD, 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Laura Giegling and one infant brother.
