He is survived by: his children, Corbin Herman (Terri) of Custer and Tylee Peterson (Jim) of Spearfish; his close friend Rhonda Siegrist; his grandchildren, Cody Herman (Alisha), Shane Herman (Kylie), Jessica Servaty (Jake), Matthew Peterson (Sophie), Yohannes Peterson and Rediet Peterson; his great grandchildren, Harper, Graham, Marley, Boaz, James, Colette, Maeve and Nella; and his stepbrother Del May.

In his later years, he was well-known for his birdhouses that he loved to share and donate.
