She was predeceased by: her parents, Eva Schnabel (Dewald) and Conrad Schnabel. She is survived by: her sons, Lester Merkel (June) of Eureka and Curtis Merkel (Sandy) of Aberdeen, SD; her grandchildren, Tammy Welder (Nick), Michael Merkel (Brittany) and Joni Batie (Jeff) of Aberdeen; and her great grandchildren, Zoey, Ezra, Beau, Shiloh and Pearl Merkel of Aberdeen.
Her hobbies included growing plants and flowers, gardening, knitting, and quilting many blankets for family and for donating to blanket drive charities.
