He was predeceased by: his parents, Franklin Mark and Mildred Marie Abernathy (Schenegge); and his siblings, Mile, Marie, Bill, Grace, Mildred, Twila, Rita and Louis.
He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Messmer; his children, Dean Abernathy (Beth) of Costa Mesa, Julie Monday (Dave) of Chester, Alicia Helmer (Loren) of Andover, Cindy Leonhardt (Terry) of Groton and Kristie Gibbs (Bob) of Groton; his grandchildren, Mark Ian (Annie), Austin Abernathy, Justin Maytum (Megan), Jessica Duval (Brian), Emily, Ethan, Chloe, Levi Monday, Josey Heupel (Josh), Kate Helmer, Cheyenne Goodrich (Cameron), Taylor Krause (Adam), Tyra Bechen (Jarid) and Mark Leonhardt (Kayla Harrison); his great grandchildren, Aurora, Simon, Mara, Luke, Abigail, Caleb, Hayes and Kinley; his brothers, Larry Abernathy (Arlys) of Chamberlain and Mike Abernathy of Pierre; and his grandsons, Ian, Riley and Ryan.
