He was predeceased by: his parents, Cecil Gilbert and Mabel Gilbert (Saugstad); his sister Diane Gilbert; and his nephew Jason Mendel. He is survived by: his wife Vickie Mattke; his children, Hollie Barrie of Huron, Scott Gilbert of Huron, Lyza Bixler (Zane) and Matt Gilbert (Brenda); his grandchildren, Josh Barrie, Kymberlie Smith (Jordan), Jared Barrie (Brandi), Heather Chaplin (Cole), Erin Leidholt (Logan), Jennfier LaBrie, Jessica LaBrie, Tanner Gilbert, Ryan Bixler, Bennett Bixler, Grady Gilbert and Emmitt Gilbert; his great grandchildren, Blake, Beckett, Jovi, Sutton, Cooper, Makenna Savvy, Luka, Hudson, McKoy and Leo; and his siblings, Gary Gilbert (Donna), Judy Mendel (Dave) and Janice Foster (Curt). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church (18507 405th Ave, Doland, SD 57436). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 at 10:30 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 at the Altoona Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
