He was predeceased by: his parents, Nicholaus Burkel and Nideen Burkel (Peterson); his wife Dianna Rae of Wilfred's Catholic Church; his son-in-law Kelup Lechner; his grandson Bryce; his great grandchild Grace; his siblings, Donald Burkel (Donna) and Lena Ann Burkel; and his siblings-in-law, Janet Rust (Ron) and Richard Bauman (Brigid).
He is survived by: his child Thomas Burkel (Dawn) of Huron; his granddaughter Dawn Lechner-Conn (Cully) of Aberdeen; his great grandchild Jody Spaugh (Greg) of Dell Rapids; his sisters, Janet Voorhees (Laural) of Woonsocket, SD and Margaret Moody (Mike) of Woonsocket, SD; James Burkel (Billie Jo) of Cavour. He is also survived by two children; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.
