He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Wellnitz and Allkie Wellnitz (Blum); his parents-in-law, Walter and Olga Schmeichel (Klepel); his sons, Brian and Terry Wellnitz; his brothers, Rick, Donnie and Dale; and his sisters-in-law, Joan Bowers and Gerri Schmeichel.
He is survived by: his wife Sharon Wellnitz of Milbank, SD; his children, Lee Wellnitz of Milbank, SD, Dean Wellnitz (Tiffany) of Milbank, SD, Tammy Wojahn (Jason) of Fulshear, TX and Kelly Dockter of Willow Lake, SD; his siblings, Joyce Hermans (Floyd) of Milbank, SD and Earl Wellnitz (Marlys) of Greeley, CO; and his siblings-in-law, Sandy Wellnitz (Dale) of Milbank, SD, Carol Wellnitz (Donny) of Norwood, Margie Wellnitz (Rick "Cowboy") of Milbank, SD, Loren Schmeichel (Rita) of Milbank, SD and Dick Schmeichel (Linda) of Milbank, SD.. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.
