He was predeceased by: his father Clarence "Junior" Nickelson; his in-laws, John and Mercedes Lemke; and his brother-in-law Darrell Kerney. He is survived by: his mother Noreen Nickelson of Highmore; his children, Shawn Marie (Lance) of Sioux Falls and John Richard; his wife Alice Nickelson (Lemke); his son Travis Olson (Lori) of Madison; his siblings, Larry (Bonnie) of Highmore, Dennis of Rapid City, Kay Kerney Rochelle (Rick) of Spearfish, Brenda Carrillo (Billy) of Spearfish and Lemke; his brothers-in-law, Maurice (Sandy) of Dupree, John D. (Judy) of Lantry, Jim (Charlanne) of Brodus, MT and Clayton (Kristi) of New Underwood; his grandchildren, Amanda Fincher (Chad) of Sioux Falls, Austin Koester (Kori Hansen) of Sioux Falls, Samantha King (Drake Neill) of Fort Collins, CO, Rachel, Myles and Tyler Olson of Madison; his stepgrandchildren, Sarah Thorson (Corey) of Sioux Falls and Lucas King of Vermillion; and his great grandchildren, Addison, Brody Fincher, Chase and Corrah Thorson.
Visitation was held on Thursday, December 4th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Prayer Service Bittner Funeral Chapel (805 W Havens Ave, Mitchell, SD 57301). A prayer was held on Thursday, December 4th 2025 at 6:30 PM at the same location. A funeral service was held on Friday, December 5th 2025 at 10:30 AM at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church (1401 W Cedar Ave, Mitchell, SD 57301).
