He was predeceased by: his parents, Einer Lyle Swanson and Gladys Ina Swanson; and his daughter-in-law Amy Swanson (David). He is survived by: his wife Mary Ellen; his children, Lisa Stanley (Chris) and David Swanson (Loura); his grandchildren, Christian and Abigail Stanley; and his sister Virginia Evans (Paul). He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 6th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Isburg Funeral Chapel (439 S Pierre St, Pierre, SD 57501). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 7th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church (5001 E Madison St, Sioux Falls, SD 57110).
He requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in support of the Alan W. and Mary E. Swanson Scholarship Fund.
