He was predeceased by: his parents, George Tjarks and Dena Tjarks (Kahman); his wife Dolores Tjarks; his daughter Pamela Hammond; and his siblings, Lorna Brown, Ilene Gerdes, Delores Merkel, Delmar Tjarks and Myron Tjarks.
He is survived by: his children, Dr. Mary Tjarks of Iowa City, IA, Dr. Brian Tjarks (Susan) of Mitchell, SD and Kathy Fitch (Bob) of Hawarden, IA; his son-in-law Dale Hammond of Kimberly, ID; his grandchildren, David Hammond, Christine Hammond, Lori Gillette (Chris), Erik Shewmaker (Ashley), Katie Hazen (Brian), Joel Tjarks (Lindsay) and Cole Fitch; his great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lilly, Liv, Lane, Madelyn, Zachary, Benjamin, Michael, Holly and Robert; his great great grandchildren, Harley and Scarlett; his sisters, Frances Schliep of Hastings, NE and Barbara Sadd of Lincoln, NE; and his sister-in-law Carol Wimpy of Boerne, TX.
A memorial service was held on Monday, September 14th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Peace Lutheran Church (5509 W 41st St, Sioux Falls, SD 57106).
Memorials are preferred to Peace Lutheran Church.
