He was predeceased by: his mother Gertrude Hempel (Trowbridge); his wife Joanne; his father Paul Hempel; his grandson Jason Stuberg; and his siblings, Richard Hempel (Margaret), Gladys Gerriets (Lewie) and Margaret Hallstrom (Charles).

He is survived by: his sons, Kevin Hempel (Robin) of Watertown, SD, Kirk Hempel (Judy) of Ocala, FL and Kyle Hempel (Heather) of Loveland, CO; his grandchildren, Jonathan Hempel (Aleah), Jamie Castle (Wayne), David Hempel (Mellissa) and Cassandra Hempel (Sean Summers); his granddaughter-in-law Jaime Stuberg; his great grandchildren, Dean, Bryson, Anna, Zoe, Henry, Tristan, Brysen and Kiegan; and his brother David Hempel (Mary) of Webster, SD.
