Max Durgin Obituary
In loving memory of Max Durgin of Spearfish, South Dakota, who departed this world on June 17, 2025 at the age of 84. Max leaves behind a legacy remembered by family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Max Durgin and Elizabeth Durgin (Geardink); his wife JoAnn Durgin; his brother John Durgin; and his siblings-in-law, Gayle Durgin and Bruce Bitz.
He is survived by: his aunt Anna; his uncle Adelbert Parks; his sons, Shane Durgin (Carolyn Jo) of Philipsburg, MT and Scott Durgin (Lisa) of Gillette, WY; his grandchildren, Brady Durgin of Philipsburg, MT, Caleb Durgin of Gillette, WY, Cameron Durgin of Gillette, WY and Hannah Durgin of Gillette, WY; his brother Jerry Durgin of Rapid City, SD; his siblings-in-law, Mary Kay Bitz of Rapid City, SD, Clifford-Butch Hanson (Sandy) of Lincoln, NE and Cherie Cardaronella (Ray) of Omaha, NE; and also, Max and JoAnn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the United Church of Christ-Spearfish (920 N Main St, Spearfish, SD 57783). A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 11th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Friday, July 11th 2025 at the Rose Hill Cemetery (255 Ash St, Spearfish, SD 57783).
In lieu of flowers and honoring Max's lifelong commitment to the importance of education, donations to the Dr. Max Durgin Mathematics Scholarship would be appreciated. Memorials can be made to the Black Hills State University Foundation with a note to dedicate it to Max's scholarship.
