He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Merkwan and Adeline Merkwan (Carda) of Michael's Hospital; his grandparents, Anton, Anna Merkwan (Cahoy), James and Anna Carda (Hnilo); and his great-niece Kelli DeLange.
He is survived by: his siblings, Garry Merkwan of Sioux Falls, Jan Smit (Mark) of Platte, Jean DeLange (Rod) of Corsica and Julie Kriz (Dave) of Tyndall; his nieces and nephews, Justin Smit of Platte, Ryan Smit of Valentine, NE, Johnathan Merkwan, Darren Kriz (Janelle) of Tyndall, Mitch DeLange of Corsica, Kori DeLange of Yankton and Danielle Kloucek (Wes) of Tabor; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Boady Smit, Briggs, Nash, Jax, Emersyn Kriz, Ravenna and Rayna Kloucek.
