He was predeceased by : his father John "Pete" Petersen; his father-in-law Raymond Theunissen; his sisters-in-law, Joan Petersen, Margaret and Michelle Theunissen; and his aunts and uncles, Donald, Bonnie Diehm, Victor, Verna Young, Kenny and Richard Parks.

He is survived by : his mother Peggy Petersen (Parks) of Rapid City; his wife Mary Petersen; his daughter Kayla Barringer (Greg); his grandsons, Kristopher of Vivian and Case Barringer of Vivian; his brothers, Dan (Paulette), Kevin (Kim) of Rapid City and Paul (Ellen) of Grand Junction, CO; his mother-in-law Arleen Theunissen of Vivian; his brothers-in-law, Wayne Theunissen (Ardella) of Groton and Tim Theunissen (Dawn) of Aberdeen; and his aunt Betty Parks of Mt. Home, ID. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Owen gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
