He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Merkel and Gloria Merkel (Alcorn); his wife Rebecca Klein (Becky); and his siblings-in-law, Linda Reseigh, Linda Merkel, Rory Godkin, Mark Trefz and Mike Reseigh.
He is survived by: his siblings, Karen Godkin of Mobridge, SD, Keith Merkel of Mobridge, SD and Kristi Howard (Dean) of Watertown, SD; and his siblings-in-law, Barb Trefz of Sioux Falls, SD, Carla Miller of Sioux Falls, SD, Ron Klein (Rebeca) of Colorado and Curt Klein of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was an active member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
