He was predeceased by : his mother Marylou Vinie Steele; his children, John Steele II and Nora Ervin; the mother of his children Shirley Toppins Steele; and his siblings, Jim, Mary, Jack and Polly.

He is survived by : his son Jerry Steele; his grandchildren, Drew Steele, Brandon Bailey, Alex Bailey and Shaun Thompson; and his sister Sara Steele. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
