He was predeceased by: his parents, J. T. Fortson and Dorothy Fortson; his former wife Fay Fortson; his sister Emily Fortson; and his wife Ann Fortson.

He is survived by: his children, Bobby Fortson and Brenda Smith (Bryan); and his stepchildren, Carol Crye (Danny) and Dave Lusk (Mary). He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
