He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Cowden and Frances Cowden (Arnold); his wife Marilyn Cowden; his brother Frank Cowden; his stepsons, Bobby Westerwal and James Westerwal; and his son-in-law Martin Rightmire.

He is survived by: his children, Gene Cowden, David Cowden (Ella) and Pam Day (Chris); his stepchildren, Randy Westerwal (Mary) and Sherry Rightmire; and his siblings, Susan Stinnett (Freddie Kirkpatrick), Carol Cowden and Buddy Cowden (JoAnne). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
