He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Roberts Cole Kostelny and Euklie Cole; his stepfather John Kostelny; and his son David. He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Cuthrell Cole; his sister Sharon; his siblings-in-law, Cliff Stanley of Sparta and LaNeita Williams of Aventura, FL; his stepsister Janet Kostelny (Steve Ingels) of Duluth, Georgia.; his sons, Daniel Cole, Douglas Cole of Doyle, TN, Dustin Cole (Sarah) of Cantonment, FL and Darin Cole (Taylor) of Sparta, TN.; his granddaughters, Alyssa, Jada Cole of Waukegan, IL, Jaslyn Cole (Reece McKee) of Suitland, MD and Scottie Cole of Cantonment, FL.; his nephew Mike Stanley (Angie); and his nieces, Tracie Bosket and Candy Phillips (Todd).
After seven months in country, he was wounded in Quang Tri Province, losing an eye and suffering brain trauma, leading to Alzheimer's disease later in life.
