He was predeceased by: his parents, Jessie Canter and Cordelia Hinkle Canter; his wife Jewell Carver Canter; and his siblings, Robert Canter, James Canter, Kermith Canter, Beryl Street and Jane Coleman.

He is survived by: his son Douglas Canter (Amber) of Elizabethton; his stepson Mark Hamby (Sharon) of Jonesborough; his sisters, Ann Woods of Elizabethton, Leona Gentry of Elizabethton and Jeannette Elliott of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Austin Canter, Ty McElyea, Kayla Hamby, Darrell Collins (Taylor) and Samantha Baker; and his great grandchildren, Willow Horton, Savy Bogart, Maggie Collins, Malorie Collins and Mollie Collins.
